Stockholm is a city of contrasts. The mood is ultra-modern and relaxed, the setting historic and medieval; with royal palaces and beautiful gardens. This urban paradise is a smörgåsbord of fun. Fly to Stockholm with WOW air and experience Scandinavia
Stockholm is the capital of Sweden; a beautiful city with a population of 790.000, steeped in history and rich in culture. It was built on 14 islands and sometimes referred to as Venice of the North. Metropolitan Stockholm is divided into different districts, each with its own distinct personality. Gamla Stan, the old part of town, is a great place for wandering and getting lost on purpose. Here you'll find the Stockholm Palace, residence of the Swedish monarch. Then there's hip and colourful Södermalm or just “Söder” as the locals call it, and the so-called SoFo, south of Folkungagatan in Söder, is home to artists and designers who created a lively community, with numerous shops, cafés and restaurants.
Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset) in Kungsholmen is an iconic landmark, and where the Nobel prize banquet is held each year and the tower has a spectacular view of the whole city. For those in a Nobel kinda mood we also recommend a visit to the Nobel Museum.
The friendly Swedes take fika very seriously. But what is fika? It is such an important part of the everyday life in Sweden that it is both a verb and a noun. Fika or to fika (fee-ka) is a social coffee break where people gather for coffee and cakes and enjoy each other's company.
Have the perfect family outing at Skansen (The Sconce), the oldest outdoor museum in the world, on the island of Djurgården in central Stockholm, or visit the Vasa maritime museum and see the almost fully intact 17th century ship that has ever been salvaged. There's also great art to be seen. Head over to Moderna Museet for Dali, Pollock and Picasso or to National Museet for some Rembrandt, Degas and other old masters.
Did we forget something? Oh! Sweden is of course home to IKEA, H&M, Absolut Vodka, Volvo, Astrid Lindgren, Pippi Longstocking, meatballs... and we've saved the best for last. ABBA fans unite and head on over to the ABBA Museum in Stockholm and experience the interactive exhibition.
