A light for peace
The Imagine Peace Tower is an outdoor artwork located on Viðey Island just outside Reykjavik’s harbor. Every year, on October 9th (Lennon’s birthday) Yoko Ono visits Reykjavik to light the Imagine Peace Tower in his memory and present the LennonOno Grant for Peace. This year, the event schedule is from 6.30 pm to 10.30 pm and Yoko Ono offers free ferry rides for guests to Viðey Island for the ceremony. The illumination itself will take place at 9 pm.
A spiritual place
If you need an incentive to travel to Iceland, take it from Yoko Ono, who says: “Iceland is such a spiritual place - I always feel such a strong energy when I return there. Love, peace, understanding and the power of nature are easy to forget in today’s fast-paced modern life. In Iceland, particularly on Viðey, it becomes easier to remember how important these things are to us all and to the planet. John would have loved it.”
See the light
From October 9th, Lennon’s birthday, to December 8th, the anniversary of his death, the great column of light can be seen from around the Reykjavik capital area as it reaches high into the sky. With a background of Northern Lights, it is especially impressive, but the strength, intensity and brilliance of its light continually changes with the prevailing weather and atmospheric conditions unique to Iceland.
The world certainly needs more peace. Taking a look at the white light column of the Imagine Peace Tower on a cool, crisp October or November evening can be a spiritual experience. Dress warm, take a moment and send out a wish for peace.
