Meet the WOWwomen
Last week WOW air kicked off a contest where amazing everyday-heroines could win flight tickets for two to any WOW air destination. We received hundreds of stories of different women, with different backgrounds from all over the world. Today, on International Women’s day, when the world unites in its campaign for equality, we reveal the winners and their stories.
Maria is a 19-year-old girl from Montréal, Canada. In September 2018 she was diagnosed with stage four cancer, but today Maria is cancer free. Maria fought the disease bravely for six months and put her body through a rough chemo treatment. She had to quit her job and take a break from her studies at nursing school, but according to her mother, she did all of this with a smile on her face.
Denise from the USA has been a leader of her household, as well as raising a family while having to endure some tough times over the years. Recently the stress has been phenomenal, as she’s been taking care of her mother, who has an extremely rare type of cancer. On top of that her home flooded, requiring months of renovations. Denise’s daughter, Morgan, says there is no one more deserving of a vacation than her mother. Hopefully, this vacation can now become a reality.
Donna from the USA is truly an inspirational woman. She’s basically been a caretaker since she was a young girl, being her mother’s right-hand in a household with eight children. Now she raises her two biological children, has welcomed two stepchildren, and helps her twin sibling, who is disabled, with parenting her two children. She also volunteered at a home in Haiti, where of course, the kids just gravitated towards her. Donna was nominated by her sister who thinks the world of her.
Cindy is a young woman living in Toronto, Canada. She was nominated by her sister, who says Cindy can juggle being present for her friends and family, work at a law firm as well as being an advocate for refugees in Canada at the same time. While volunteering at Women’s Health in Women’s Hands during her undergrad years, Cindy met a lot of women whom she saw as heroines, but were stuck in complicated immigration issues. Now she works as an immigration consultant and helps people navigate through a difficult system to live a better life.
Rita from the UK was nominated by her daughter Callie, who says she’s an absolute superhero and the best Nana ever! Rita is always there for her family and is willing to drop everything to help look after her granddaughter, Callie’s dog, or even Callie herself. Rita is truly inspiring to those around her, always willing to lend a helping hand, whenever and wherever needed, and selfless to the core as Callie puts it.
